BSO Deputies Find Dog Stolen From Homeless Couple

A heartless thief tricked a homeless couple, and took off with their car and their beloved pet on Wednesday. One day later, the dog was back with its loving owners.

Even though Shelley doesn't have much, getting Lacy back was what she wanted most, "I didn't sleep. I didn't eat. Been miserable."

She's now grateful to the Broward Sheriff's Office. Deputies found Lacy after she was stolen, along with the vehicle that Shelley and her friend were sleeping in at a Walmart in Lauderdale Lakes.

Shelley said a man distracted them and then took off in their Toyota Corolla with everything they own.

"This is a real holiday miracle for this family. Yesterday they had nothing when their car was stolen with their little dog, Lacy. Today everything is turned around," said Gina Carter with BSO.

Detectives said the vehicle was found not far from the sheriff's office. The dog was found in Lauderhill, and has won the hearts of some of those who serve and protect this county.

"She's our robbery unit mascot. We have pictures all over. They don't want to let her go," said Det. Mohammad Rezi with BSO.

Shelley knows her pet brings joy and that's why losing her was heartbreaking, "She's like my daughter."

Detectives said the vehicle stolen in this case was also recovered, but some of the items that were in the car are gone.

No arrests have been made, but police said they believe a young, black man in his 20's, with dreadlocks, is responsible. If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
