Candidates Wait for Recount Results in Florida House District 118 Race

Two candidates vying to represent on South Florida district in the Florida House are anxiously waiting for the outcome of an automatic recount to determine the winner.

Democrat Robert Asencio – who held a lead in just single digits after the final vote was turned over to the state – is facing off against Republican challenger and former U.S. Rep. David Rivera for the 118th district.

The margin of Asencio’s lead was around one tenth of a percentage point, or 68 votes. State law requires an automatic recount for any election with a margin half of a percentage point or less.

A result could be announced as early as Thursday afternoon.

With 70,000 people voting 50 votes is .0008 of the entire count, so you never know what the outcome will be  such a close election

"With 70,000 people voting 50 votes is .0008 of the entire count, so you never know what the outcome will be such a close election," said Rivera.

Rivera is looking to make a return to Tallahassee, where he served four terms in the Florida House before running for Congress. Asencio is a former captain with the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, where he served for 26 years.
