Car Crashes into Elderly Woman's House

The daughter of the elderly woman told NBC 6 that cars frequently end up on the lawn because of speed.

The driver of the car was transported to the hospital. The extent of his injuries are still unknown.

A structural engineer told a family that their Little Havana house isn't safe enough to stay in tonight after a car plowed through the front of the home Friday afternoon.

The driver of a black Hyundai Santa Fe SUV sped through the family's concrete fence, across the front lawn, and straight into the family room.

Miami Fire Rescue responded to the scene at 1210 SW 11 Street, where a 98-year-old woman and her caretaker were inside at the time of the accident, but were not injured.

The elderly woman who lives here was sleeping in the back when it happened. Her caretaker usually sits in a chair in the front room. She told NBC 6 that for some reason she had decided to sit in the back of the home instead to read her Bible. That decision may have saved her life.

Neighbors say they saw the driver speed up through the nearby intersection. Instead of turning right, they say he went straight into the home.

The 98 year woman's daughter says cars have landed on her front yard more than a dozen times over the past few years.

"In a way I am very thankful that nothing happened to human beings," Marta Etcheverry said. "At the same time, I hope something is done to correct this problem. It's a big problem."

Lieutenant Ignacio Carroll from Miami Fire Rescue said the male driver had his arm partially out of the front windshield of the SUV and had to be extricated out of the car.

The driver and passenger were rushed to the hospital. Police are waiting to question them about what happened.
