Woman Dies After Car Slams Into Pollo Tropical

The woman who was pinned for up to 10 minutes underneath a car that slammed into a Pollo Tropical restaurant in Davie has died.

The woman was identified as 41-year-old Zamara Gonzalez. A man and a child sustained minor injuries.

The incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. at the Pollo Tropical located at 5780 S. University Drive.

"Davie Police working a serious crash at Pollo Tropical," DPD said in a statement.

Police said the red car that crashed inside was involved in a minor collision with a black Mercedes-Benz at the restaurant's entrance, which caused driver of the red car – described as an elderly male – to lose control.

The incident is under investigation. Authorities believe it is possible the driver stepped on the gas pedal instead of the break. It is not yet clear if the driver will be charged or cited.

The car stopped in the area of the restaurant where people order food. At the time of the crash, there was a line of people waiting to order.

Police, customers and others attempted to help take the car off the woman who was pinned but they were unable to fully free her.

Firefighters freed her by using an apparatus to move the car and pull her out.
