Caregiver Arrested for Leaving Disabled Men in Hot Vehicle While She Shopped: Sheriff

Police arrested a caregiver in the Florida Keys on Saturday after she left two disabled men in a turned-off vehicle as she shopped.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office arrested 62-year-old Luda Logash of Big Pine Key after the men she was caring for were found sweating in a hot van with the windows rolled up.

Deputies responded to the parking lot of a K-Mart store in Marathon around 1 p.m. The two men were in wheelchairs, which were strapped to the floor of the van to keep them from moving. According to the sheriff's office, the men suffer from a disability which did not allow them to open the door or windows by themselves.

The deputy opened the van's sliding side door, which was unlocked. That's when Logash came out of the store.

Paramedics checked the men, who were not harmed in the incident.

Logash was arrested and charged with felony abuse of an elderly or disabled adult. It is unclear whether she has an attorney.
