A central Florida teenager faces multiple charges after authorities say he escaped the custody of a sheriff's deputy and stole a patrol car.
The incident unfolded Sunday in DeLand.
A Volusia County Sheriff's deputy took the 17-year-old into custody around 2 p.m. Sunday after spotting him driving a pickup truck that had been reported stolen. The teen was arrested on charges of grand theft and driving without a license.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports a deputy was filling out paperwork at a district office when the teen slipped out of handcuffs and drove away in the patrol car. Authorities found the vehicle abandoned at a nearby park, where it had crashed into a fence.
The teen was recaptured a short time later and taken to a juvenile detention center.
