Charges Dropped Against Broward Cab Driver in Sex Battery Case

A Broward County cab driver accused of kidnapping and sexually battering a female passenger is no longer facing charges, authorities said Monday.

The charges filed against 61-year-old Ronald Smith were dropped after an investigation by Wilton Manors Police and the Broward State Attorney's Office revealed inconsistencies in the alleged victim's story.

Smith had been arrested on Jan. 25 after the woman claimed she was sexually molested at a hotel after getting a ride from Smith, authorities said. She claimed she was threatened with mace and stun guns.

But authorities said the woman embellished key elements of the crime, and when she was confronted with the new information, she admitted to lying about several important facts, authorities said.

The alleged victim now faces potential criminal charges herself, to be determined by the State Attorney's Office.
