A 1-year-old boy who was left inside a hot, parked car for hours in Pembroke Pines died Friday, and police are reminding families to not leave loved ones or pets inside a vehicle, especially during the summer months.
Law enforcement and fire officials responded to a report for medical assistance at around 5 p.m. in a parking lot in the 2200 block of North University Drive, where they found the 17-month-old child in his car seat, according to the Pembroke Pines Police Department.
"Regrettably, CPR life-saving efforts and Fire Rescue transport did not prevent an unfortunate tragedy," police said in a news release.
A preliminary investigation showed that the parent may have parked their car and left for a work shift, police said. The child may have been in the car for up to eight hours.
An investigation is underway. No additional information was immediately available.
"Members of our community are reminded that leaving a child inside a car is a year-long hazard, but it is especially deadly during the summer months when temperatures can climb above 100 degrees within minutes," Pembroke Pines police said in a news release. "Always double check your vehicle after you park for loved ones or pets."
