Mother of Child Found Wandering Miami Street Alone Arrested

Police investigating after child found alone on Miami street

The mother of a child was found wandering alone on a Miami street early Wednesday morning has been arrested, police said.

Janisleidys Herbello, 24, was charged with one count of child neglect after her 3-year-old son was found walking in the area of Southwest 32nd Avenue and W. Flagler Street around 4:15 a.m., Miami Police said.

Police said a concerned passerby spotted the child and called 911. Police responded to the area and officers were seen bringing the child to a nearby home.

Herbello told detectives she left her son sleeping at 1 a.m. and went to a friend's house to drink and use drugs, police said.

"She admits that she had left this child sleeping alone, at approximately one in the morning, to go to a friend's house just to party," Miami Police spokesman Det. Willie Moreno said. "Apparently she didn't see much of an issue leaving her child sleeping, obviously this is something of great concern."

When she arrived home around 5 a.m., she discovered officers at her house, police said.

Witnesses said they couldn't believe the child was left alone.

"Very shocking to see the child walking alone in the street, on the sidewalk," witness David Obregon said.

Herbello was being held on $5,000 bond Wednesday, and it was unknown whether she has an attorney. The father of the toddler, who doesn't live with the child, took the boy from the police station.
