Confederate Monument in Florida's Panhandle Vandalized

A Confederate monument in Florida's Panhandle has been vandalized.

Pensacola Police say the words "Confed lives don't matter" were found painted early Friday on one side of the memorial.

The granite monument was installed in 1891 with an inscription honoring "the Uncrowned Heroes of the Southern Confederacy, whose joy was to suffer and die for a cause they believed to be just."

Chief David Alexander III says police are investigating "as possible felony criminal mischief because of the extent of the damage."

Last month, Pensacola's mayor ordered the First National Flag of the Confederacy removed from the city's Five Flag displays representing the five governments that have controlled the region. They were replaced with Florida's state flag.

Escambia County also replaced the Confederate flag in its display with Florida's flag.
