An early morning construction accident in downtown Miami has left one person dead and halted service on the city’s Metromover.
Miami-Dade Police say shortly before 1 a.m., a car from the system that runs through the city collided with a crane, throwing two workers from that construction equipment. 43-year-old Oscar Cabrera fell to the ground while the second worker, Luis Perez, was dangling from his harness.
Both were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where Cabrera died. Perez was later released. No passengers were on the train.
One person at the scene told NBC 6 that the railcar was on a maintenance run when the accident occurred - something that normally takes place in the overnight hours. That information has not been confirmed by officials.
Police are also investigating if there was any issues with the safety devices worn by both men, confirming that both had the proper gear on at the time of the accident.
"We understand that they both had their safety equipment on, but now the question is was it being used properly? Was there any default, was there any problems? So all of that will come out in the investigation," Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said.
