The city of Coral Gables named Major Ed Hudak as the interim police chief Thursday afternoon, less than a day after previous chief, Dennis Weiner, announced his resignation.
Hudak has been with Coral Gables Police since 1988 and will serve as interim chief until a permanent replacement can be found, the city announced Thursday. The selection of the new chief will not come until a new city manager is hired. The new city manager will then hire a new chief.
Former Chief Dennise Weiner resigned his position at 8 a.m. Thursday. Weiner had been chief since March 2011 since coming over from the Juno Beach Police Department, according to the Miami Herald.
According to the Herald, the resignation came as Weiner was under fire from some Coral Gables commissioners and residents over crime statistics from the department in the wake of several burglaries over the past few months.
