Couple Gets Engaged at Finish Line of Miami Marathon

What to Know

  • More than 20,000 people took to the streets Sunday to participate in the Miami Marathon.
  • Once a couple reached the finish line, the man dropped on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend.
  • This was the man's first marathon and the woman's 20th.

More than 20,000 runners enjoyed perfect weather conditions in Downtown Miami this morning as they ran their way through the heart of the city for the 16th annual Fitbit Miami Marathon.

At least one couple commemorated the occasion with a grand gesture at the finish line — a marathon engagement!

This was Stefano Deleo’s first marathon, and the 20th for his new fiancée Sofia Herdstrom.

“I thought what better occasion to propose to get married,” said Deleo, who is originally from Italy.

His Swedish girlfriend says this was her most challenging marathon yet, and she struggled to even finish.

Meanwhile, Deleo left her behind as he pushed to get to the finish line before her, in order to prepare for his proposal.

26.2 miles later, the happy couple was reunited as hundreds of people cheered them on.

“When I like crossed the finish line he was standing there on his knee,” said Herdstrom. “The best surprise ever!”

Theirs is just one out of 20,000 stories that’s unraveled at this year’s Fitbit Miami Marathon.

“It’s an annual tradition celebrating everything that makes Miami special, which is a mix of people a mix of cultures,” said marathon co-founder Frankie Ruiz.
