Court Denies Appeal for FAMU Hazing Defendant

An appellate court has denied the appeal of a Florida man convicted for his role in a Florida A & M drum major's hazing death.

Florida's Fifth District Court of Appeal on Friday denied Dante Martin's appeal of his convictions on manslaughter, felony hazing and misdemeanor hazing charges.

Martin's attorneys had argued that Florida's hazing law was unconstitutionally vague and too broad. The appellate judges rejected that argument. Martin is serving a sentence of over six years.

Robert Champion collapsed and died in 2011 after being pummeled by other members of FAMU's famed Marching 100 band with fists and instruments during a brutal ritual known as ``crossing Bus C.'' The bus was parked outside an Orlando hotel after a football game.

The incident exposed a culture of hazing within the band.
