A hit-and-run crash involving a Miami Police Department vehicle Monday morning sent that officer to the hospital and ended with a woman's arrest, authorities said.

The crash occurred on U.S. 1 near Riviera Drive in Coral Gables, where the police cruiser collided with another vehicle. Coral Gables Police say the police car was traveling southbound when it was hit by a Kia Sorrento SUV that lost control while traveling northbound just before 3 a.m.

Officers say the driver of that SUV fled the scene at first but came back to speak with investigators.

The woman, later identified by police as 29-year-old Amalia Gonzalez, was arrested on multiple charges including leaving the scene of a crash with injuries, careless driving, and possession of a stolen vehicle.

The officer involved suffered a broken wrist and was taken to a nearby hospital, but is expected to be okay.

He was later identified as Officer Alain Guerra, a member of the department for more than 11 years.

All lanes were shut down for a period of time before northbound lanes reopened before 6 a.m. Southbound lanes remained closed for nearly a half hour more before reopening.
