Couple, Dog Safe After Crews Put Out Early Morning Boat Fire in Dania Beach

Crews worked Wednesday morning to put out a massive fire that broke out on a vessel docked in Dania Beach.

Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue arrived at the scene located at 151 North Beach Road after reports of the blaze starting around 4:30 a.m. on the 42 foot luxury yacht named "Lady Di."

About 60 firefighters responded and were able to put out the fire about two hours later.

According to BSO officials, the boat's owners and a small dog named Cocoa were awakened by a neighbor, Greg Heath, who discovered their vessel had caught fire.

"I’m just yelling 'get off the boat, the boats on fire' and hit it as hard as I can," said Heath. "Then, I ran out on the boat, got on the back door and started pounding on the back glass door."

The owners said they barely had time to escape with just a few items and their dog.

"One more minute we wouldn’t be here right now," said Carolyn Grasso. "We both worked all out lives to have our dream, and it is what it is. God will provide."

No other boats nearby were damaged, however people are being kept away from the area until the scene is cleared.

"I’m glad I was there, I’m glad I was awake. I wish I could have saved the boat," Heath said. "They’re my friends, I love these people."
