Cuba Sentences 2 to Life in Prison in Migrant Trafficking Scheme

Cuba's official newspaper Granma says two men have been sentenced to life imprisonment in a migrant trafficking scheme that left four people dead.

The daily reported Monday that another five people have received prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years in the unsuccessful plan. Granma says the trial was held in recent days in a provincial court in Artemisa, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) west of the capital.

Details about the case were sketchy. The report did not specify how the four people died on June 7 in Artemisa municipality. It said in the scheme, 11 people were charged money to be taken to the United States by sea, but it didn't say how much.

The case comes as Cuba and the US move toward a more normal relationship.
