Danell Leyva Adjusting to Newfound Fame

Leyva told NBC 6 South Florida his training will become more intense

Danell Leyva may have taken center stage in London when he clinched the bronze medal in the all-around men’s gymnastics competition, but the Miami native says he’s still adjusting to his newfound fame.

"I went to Chipotle on Kendall Drive and it's somewhere I go a lot, every day, and some guy in his car was like, 'Hey man, congrats," and I was like, 'Thanks,'" Levya said.

The gymnast, with his Olympic bronze medal in hand Thursday, was also recognized by an officer in the restaurant.

"It's very surreal. It definitely hasn't processed yet," he said.

Leyva, 20, said he's not used to being recognized.

“But to be completely honest, you dream about the moment of getting the medal and you dream about that moment. You don’t really dream about the aftermath, which is autographs, interviews, videos, getting recognized," he said. "So it’s cool. It’s a little different feeling."

Leyva may have traveled across the pond and back, but he says he’s not leaving Miami, except for a much-needed vacation out of the country.

"When I come back I'm going to start and just be focused all the way through. I already got Rio on my mind," he said.
