International DJ and Producer David Guetta's song "Hey Mama" is all over the radio. The hit currently sits at #1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.
On Tuesday, Guetta released the music video for his collaboration featuring Nicki Minaj.
This is the first time Guetta has placed #1 in this category, marking a big accomplishment in his career.
“It’s amazing. I’m so happy, of course. Being #1 on Billboard is a big deal,” Guetta told NBC 6.
He hopes to see the track hit #1 on the Pop charts. It's currently at #14, but is quickly rising to the top.
Guetta said it felt almost impossible for dance music to become popular in the U.S., since Europe was known as the capital for electronic dance music.
“I’ve been playing house music since I was very, very young and I never thought that this music would become so big, especially in America,” he said.
From what started as “underground” music, Guetta was one of the first major artists who helped bring electronic dance music to the United States.
Guetta credits Miami and New York for having a huge role in the rise of dance music in the U.S.
“There was no other cities in the U.S. that was playing this type of music. Miami was always a big capsule of dance music in the U.S.,” Guetta said.
The French DJ is occasionally in Miami and plays at some of Miami’s hottest clubs, including LIV and STORY in Miami Beach.
“Miami has the best refreshments, clubs, and sexiest girls on the planet for sure," he said. "It’s fun. You have the beach. There’s everything,”
During Miami Music Week, Guetta made national headlines when Miami Marketing Group founder Dave Grutman accidentally crashed his boat into the dock of Guetta's Miami home. Thankfully, nobody was injured.
“It was kind of crazy because Dave Grutman came with Tiesto and Martin Garrix and they were so excited to surprise me that they forgot to use the brake. They completely crashed the dock but it was good fun," Guetta said.
Moments after having a wrecked dock, Guetta laughed it off and decided to hop on the boat and party with the star-studded DJs.
Guetta is scheduled to headline the iHeartRadio Pool Party in Las Vegas on Saturday, May 30th, joining Nicki Minaj, Nick Jonas, Chris Brown, Kelly Clarkson, Shaggy and Echosmith.
