Miami Police are investigating a deadly shooting between motorists early Wednesday morning that left one man dead and another hospitalized and had a major downtown intersection closed during the morning drive.

Officers arrived at the scene near Flagler Street and Miami Avenue around midnight after reports of shots being fired.

When officers arrived they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds, and an uninjured man in his 30s who was detained, officials said.

One witness said that a car came to the intersection and hit a light pole on the sidewalk. A short time later, another car came up behind that vehicle with the driver getting out and opening fire, the witness said.

The first vehicle tried to escape, but it hit another car before coming to a stop. One man was found dead inside the car while another was taken to Ryder Trauma Center, where he was in serious but stable condition.

Police identified the man who was killed as 24-year-old Jose Rivero.

The man who was detained was being questioned by detectives, officials said. The motive for the shooting was unknown.

"There's a lot that we're trying to unravel. There's a lot that we still don't know and we are trying to see how we can piece this puzzle together," Miami Police spokesperson Kenia Fallat said.

Sections along Flagler Street and Miami Avenue were closed until just before 9:30 a.m.
