Armed Suspect Shot and Killed by BSO in Dania Beach Hotel Parking Lot

Authorities are investigating a deputy-involved shooting that left an armed suspect dead in the parking lot of a Dania Beach hotel Monday morning.

The shooting was reported outside the Home2 Suites at 161 Southwest 19th Court.

Broward Sheriff's Office spokesman Carey Codd said the incident began when deputies tried to make a traffic stop on a vehicle for a possible stolen tag.

A man who was in the car fled and deputies pursued him on foot to the parking lot, where the shooting happened, Codd said.

"The suspect who fled from the car was armed at the time of the shooting and a gun was removed near the male subjects body," Codd said.

Codd said three deputies were at the scene when the shooting happened, but didn't say how many opened fire.

Jennifer Turner, who was visiting South Florida from Ohio, said the incident unfolded in front of her while she and her children were in their car. She said she saw the suspect and police and heard nine or ten gunshots.

"It seemed like something out of a video game. I just took off because it's like something out of Grand Theft Auto," Turner said. "I had kids in the car. I didn’t know if he was going to try to get in our car. I was afraid he was going to hit us because when he started spinning around doing donuts he came close to our car. I mean literally he was right in front of us."

The identity of the suspect wasn't released. Codd said the shooting remains under investigation.
