DeSantis said he would convene the legislature for a special session beginning the week of Jan. 27, just one week after the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
DeSantis said Trump will make major changes in immigration policy, and the state needs to take actions to help carry them out.

"State and local officials in Florida must help the Trump administration enforce our nation’s immigration laws," DeSantis said.
The legislature will also address reported security concerns with the citizen ballot initiative process and proposed several changes, including requiring the notarizing of signatures, holding special elections for ballot measures and amending how the Supreme Court in Florida approves them for the ballot.
This comes after two high-profile amendments concerning recreational marijuana and abortion rights made it onto the 2024 ballot, despite opposition from the governor and other Republican officials.

Both measures fell just short of the required 60% approval threshold to become enshrined in the Florida Constitution.
The governor also mentioned that the session will also address condominium regulations and hurricane relief.
After two hard-hitting hurricanes in 2024, DeSantis said addressing these issues “cannot wait” for the regular legislative session in March.
