Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.
Howard had a huge game against Buffalo on Sunday and helped Miami pick up a much-needed win. Howard had four tackles and two interceptions, while also defending two pass attempts in the game.
This is the second time in Howard's career that he was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week. The previous time came in December of 2017, following a strong effort against the New England Patriots. Howard is only the second Miami cornerback ever to win this award more than once.
Howard is signed through the 2019 season and his asking price may just keep rising. The veteran CB switched agents recently, with extension talks possible in the future. Howard's agent is Damarius Bilbo who also represented Jarvis Landry during extension talks with Miami. Bilbo went on to reject Miami's offer for Landry, before the wide receiver ended up with the Cleveland Browns.
Howard already has seven interceptions this season and appears to be a lock for a Pro Bowl appearance. The 25-year old has set a career-high in picks and could also reach a new high in tackles. Howard has 35 combined tackles, with 4 games remaining. His previous high in that department came last season, when he compiled 48 tackles.
The Dolphins are sitting at 6-6 on the season and will face a tough test in their next outing. Miami is set to host the New England Patriots on Sunday and it arguably needs to win every game remaining. The Dolphins are 5-1 at home this year, but New England remains a powerhouse in the league. With multiple road games remaining, Miami may not be able to afford a loss in this game at home.
