Driver Arrested in Fatal Hialeah Hit-and-Run Crash That Trapped a 66-Year-Old Woman Under a SUV

A Hialeah man was arrested Saturday evening after police say he was involved in a deadly hit-and-run accident.

Ernesto Izquierdo Gonzalez, 25, ran a stop sign and crashed into a SUV, killing a 66-year-old woman, according to police.

The victim was identified as Amelia Caridad Diaz, a resident of Hialeah. She was thrown from the passenger seat of a Ford Excursion that toppled over and trapped her underneath.

The crash occured at the intersection of NW 2nd Avenue and 20th Street Saturday evening around 6:30 p.m.

Neighbors say it's one of the worst things they've ever seen.

"I was crying and screaming for my husband to go there because someone was trapped... very hard," an unidentified neighbor told NBC 6.

More than a dozen neighbors & officers lifted the SUV off the woman but it was too late.

Diaz was pronounced dead on the spot.

Police say the driver that caused the crash, fled the scene before being arrested at a nearby food market.

Diaz was riding with five family members who had to watch a loved one die, according to police.

Investigators say it's not clear if the victim was wearing a seat belt.

No one else was seriously hurt. Police are still investigating the accident.

Ernesto Izquierdo Gonzalez was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, resisting arrest, domestic violence and driving with a suspended license with knowledge.

It is unclear if he has an attorney.
