The North Miami Police Department is searching for a suspect who allegedly tried to run over officers who were going on a weekly community bike ride.
The incident occurred Thursday near an apartment complex located at 12990 NE 6 Avenue. As the 12 officers approached a suspicious vehicle on the property of the complex, the driver put the vehicle in reverse and accelerated forward as "he attempted to drive over the officers."
"He continued at a high rate of speed through the driveway, running over one of the officer’s bicycles, toward the additional group of officers," the NMPD said in a statement. "The officers had to jump out of the vehicle’s path to avoid death or injury. The driver had complete disregard for the safety of the public when fleeing the area."
Police said two bikes were mangled in the incident.
The vehicle is described as a blue or dark gray older model Infiniti with one gold or silver door and a temporary tag that begins with the letter C.
"The officers, thankfully, were not injured. They were able to drop their bicycles and move out of the way, but the bicycles were mangled," North Miami Police Cmdr. Rafael Estrugo said. "And we're still looking for this very dangerous suspect that tried to basically kill our police officers today."
Authorities urge anyone with information to call the NMPD at 305-891-8111 or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).
