Driver Charged in Hit and Run That Killed Irish Tourist

A driver that killed a tourist in a hit and run accident in North Lauderdale Saturday has been arrested.

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives said 35-year-old Richard Jennings was behind the wheel of his girlfriend's black BMW X3 SUV just before 5 a.m. Saturday. That's when detectives said Jennings struck 36-year-old Martin James O'Connor in the 5300 block of State Road 7 as the man attempted to cross the street. Jennings fled the scene in the damaged SUV.

An acquaintance of Jennings saw the damaged vehicle and contacted BSO. Detectives arrested him at his Hollywood home shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday.

Jennings is charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death. It is unclear whether Jennings has an attorney.

Authorities said O'Connor was leaving a bar and walking back to his hotel with two friends when he was hit. He was visiting Florida from Ireland.
