Driver in DUI Crash That Injured Principal May Accept Plea Deal

There's a new face defending a woman accused in a devastating crash on a South Florida baseball field at Tamiami Park, and the suspect could take a plea deal.

The April 2016 crash badly injured beloved South Dade High School Principal Javier Perez.

Marilyn Aguilera was charged with DUI and has been on house arrest since last year.

The 51-year-old hired a new attorney to represent her case: Ana Davide. The new attorney appeared at a hearing Monday. She told NBC 6 she is representing the single mom pro bono because Aguilera could not afford her previous attorney, Richard Gregg.

"I think what I need to do as her attorney is work with the state to try to move this matter forward, have her accept responsibility and see what we can do. I'm going do my best in my power," said Davide.

Perez was coaching his son's baseball team when police said Aguilera plowed into the principal on the field. Perez lost both of his legs after the crash, and he continues to recover.

The 51-year-old did not appear in court Monday. A plea deal is now on the table for her, but Davide declined to discuss those details with NBC 6 outside the courtroom. Aguilera is due back in court Friday.

Davide said she and Aguilera attended Lourdes High School together.
