A fire at a Hialeah home landed a man in handcuffs Monday after authorities discovered drugs inside.
Firefighters responded to a fire call at the home in the area of E. 30th Street and 6th Avenue but when they arrived a man wouldn't let them inside, officials said.
Police were called and drugs were found in the home, officials said.
"Once officers did arrive, they were able to go back there extinguish the fire and that's when they noticed the drugs," said Eddie Rodriguez of the Hialeah Police Department.
A narcotics unit removed black bags late Monday night from the home.
Police believe there could be a grow house in the rear portion of the home, possibly an efficiency. The narcotics unit was also on scene and although they said they haven't identified a person of interest, one man was placed in handcuffs. Hours later, still on scene, he was taken out of a patrol car to the back of the house.
Many neighbors also expressed concern this happened just steps away from their homes.
"It shocked me, it still shocks me, it was fire, drugs you know," said neighbor Angelo Campos.
Campos said he never saw any suspicious activity. As for the fire, officials say there was only minor damage.
"That can happen here, in Gables, Kendall, anywhere," Campos said.
Police are still investigating.
