February Kicks Off With Rising Gas Prices

After months of falling gas prices, South Florida drivers are in for a little sticker shock.

According to recent data from AAA, gas prices are likely to increase this month as a result of refinery maintenance and decreased production.

In South Florida alone, gas prices are averaging six cents higher Wednesday morning, with prices across the state averaging at $2.14 per gallon, and it could go higher in the coming months.

“It is a good bet that most drivers will pay more for gasoline in March than today,” says AAA spokesman Avery Ash. “Yet even if gas prices increase as expected, drivers should continue paying at least a dollar less on gasoline than what they spent in recent years during the spring.”

The price for a barrel of oil is generally up, and the market is very volatile, AAA said.

An overnight check of foreign markets shows another drop, so South Florida drivers should be prepared for some continued fluctuation in gas prices.

Many refineries conduct maintenance and upgrades in the spring in preparation for a busy summer driving season. That maintenance can result in a decrease in gas production, AAA says.
