Elderly Deaf Woman Killed While Trying to Cross Deerfield Beach Street: BSO

Deputies are investigating the crash that killed 71-year-old Velma Kimmel.

An elderly deaf woman was killed trying to cross a Deerfield Beach street, Broward deputies said Sunday.

Velma Kimmel, 71, was walking northbound from the median Saturday evening across the westbound lanes of Hillsboro Boulevard at about 6:45 p.m., according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Meanwhile, Malvinas Miller-Jones was turning left onto Hillsboro from Northwest 2nd Terrace. That's when Miller-Jones' white Cadillac SRX struck Kimmel.

She was taken to Broward Health North where she was pronounced dead.

Officials said there is no crosswalk in the area of the crash.

Broward's Sheriff's Office traffic homicide investigators are looking into the incident.
