Elderly Woman Killed in Opa-locka House Fire

Police are investigating after an elderly woman died in a house fire in Opa-locka Thursday.

Firefighters responded to the house in the 2000 block of York Street around 9 a.m. and found it fully engulfed in flames.

A woman in her 80s who lives with her family was home alone when the fire broke out, assistant city manager David Chiverton said.

"The fire department got here very quickly but apparently the location of where the woman laid, because she was bed ridden, it was difficult to get to her," Chiverton said.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames but not before the woman died. Officials didn't release her identity.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
