A worker at a Broward County fast food restaurant was shot in the leg early Thursday by a man who got upset after he was told the establishment was closed, officials said.

Officers and rescue crews arrived after 4 a.m. at the Checkers located near Hallandale Beach Boulevard and SW 40th Avenue in Pembroke Park.

The business had just closed when a white SUV with a male and female passenger drove up and asked two employees if they could get some food, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office. The workers told them the restaurant was closed.

"Not taking no for an answer, the driver pulled out a handgun and fired several shots toward the two men," BSO said in a news release.

One of the employees was shot in the leg and was taken to an area hospital, with what Broward Sheriff's Office officials described as a non-life threatening injury. The other employee was unharmed.

Surveillance video showed a white SUV driving into the parking lot before employees could be seen ducking from gunshots.

Authorities said the suspect is still on the loose. They were advising residents and drivers to avoid the area as Hallandale Beach Boulevard eastbound has just one lane open between 40th and 48th Avenues.
