Hurricane Dorian lashed the east end of Grand Bahama Island, leaving homes dilapidated and hitting the area with fierce storm surge.
“It is so sad, so devastating... Going crazy, everybody seeking for help,” said Carly Williams, a survivor of the Category 5 storm.
Grand Bahama Island is still without electricity and running water after Hurricane Dorian’s brutal passage through the area. Sandbags were no match for the storm’s ferocious power, with modern cinder-block homes shattering into pieces and strong winds and flooding rupturing oil storage tanks.
To help with relief, the Grand Celebration cruise ship brought an abundance of supplies to the storm-stricken island, including food, water, medicine, generators and more.
Now, the ship will take 1,600 storm refugees to Florida.
Ingrid Smith’s family was among the hundreds of people trying to get to the states aboard the ship.
“It’s been really bad, the flood came up to here in our house, we had to swim out with our children to get help,” Smith said.

While there is extensive damage and destruction on much of the island, there are parts of Grand Bahama Island that look like nothing really happened. Still, Bahamians who lost everything they owned due to Dorian are grateful for the help.
“It’ll help a whole lot…everything was lost,” said Bahamas resident Yuki Williams.
