Ex-Miami-Dade Cop Sentenced For Stealing From Motorists

A former Miami-Dade police detective convicted of stealing from motorists during traffic stops was sentenced to 3 years in prison, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday.

William Kostopoulos, 49, was found guilty of using his law enforcement authority to violate the motorists' rights and obstructing justice.

Back in 2013, the 17-year veteran with the Miami-Dade Police Department made traffic stops to steal money and property from two motorists, who were both undocumented migrant workers.

Kostopoulos also misled statements to prevent the communication of information about his crimes to federal law enforcement.

The case was investigated by the FBI along with the Homestead Police Department and Miami-Dade Police Department.
