Family ‘Devastated' by Killing of South Florida Woman in Costa Rica: Father

The father of a South Florida woman who was killed in Costa Rica said his family is devastated over his daughter's death.

Carlos Caicedo spoke with Telemundo Thursday from in Costa Rica's capital, San Jose, where his daughter Carla Stefaniak had gone on holiday to celebrate her 36th birthday.

Her body was found on Monday, half-buried and wrapped in plastic, near the apartment she'd been renting. She'd been missing for a week.

Caicedo said the family would have liked to have a mass and bury her body but since she was killed in another country, they had her body cremated.

"Her mother is devastated, she will decide what to do with the ashes," Caicedo said in Spanish.

A security guard at the apartment, Bismark Espinosa Martinez, has been arrested in connection with Stefaniak's death.
