Family of Teen Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash Holds Rally

Family and friends of a 15-year-old girl killed by a hit-and-run driver rallied Wednesday evening in Fort Lauderdale after police released video of a possible vehicle involved in the case.

Police said 15-year-old Jaliah Cross was crossing the street in her Fort Lauderdale neighborhood in the 1100 block of Northwest 15th Avenue Monday night when a driver struck her, then left her in the middle of the road.

Cross was taken to Broward Health Medical Center where she later died.

"Didn't even try to stop," said Cross' mother, Felissa Williams, through tears. "I mean, you hit somebody and kept going. That was my baby, 15-years-old."

Witnesses described seeing a newer model gray Chevy Camaro hit the teen. Police released a short video clip Wednesday showing a vehicle making a right turn at an intersection and said they're seeking the public's help in identifying the vehicle.

Neighbors, friends and family have maintained a candlelight vigil at the spot where Cross was struck and killed. Mourners have dropped off stuffed animals and flowers, as neighbors kept candles burning throughout the night.

At a vigil Tuesday night, Williams' made a tearful plea to the driver responsible for her daughter's death: "I need closure and I need to know why. How could you run over my baby and keep going?"

The rally on Wednesday evening was held along Northwest 15th Avenue. Fort Lauderdale Police shut down Northwest 15th Avenue from Sunrise Boulevard to 19th Street to allow the family to hold the rally.
