A family in North Miami was able to safely make it out of their home following an early morning fire that broke out Tuesday.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews arrived at the scene off Northwest 128th Street just east of I-95 shortly after 3:30 a.m., finding the house fully engulfed in flames.

Six of the eight people living at the home were inside at the time, with all able to get out safely along with the family dog while the other two family members were at work when the fire started.

Family members told NBC 6 that Lugo Maria was cooking breakfast when she went back to sleep after turning everything off – later smelling something and finding the fire.

"I laid down on the couch and when I woke up I felt like I was suffocating, there was smoke everywhere," Lugo said.

A neighbor called 911 while Lugo helped family members get out safely.

"In that moment, I went to the room where the other family lives and thanks to God we were all able to get out," Lugo said. "I take my mom, she’s blind and I have two little daughters, and my nephew."

Members of the family say they believe several cats did not make it out of the home in time. Investigators still have not released information on the exact cause of the fire.
