Surveillance video shows the gut-wrenching crash that killed a woman who was standing near a bus bench in Lauderhill Thursday. The crash also injured nine others and shut down part of a major roadway.
Crews responded to the scene near State Road 7 and Southwest 13th Court shortly after 12:30 p.m. Chopper 6 was over the scene, where two cars could be seen damaged along with fire crews dealing with a water leak at one location.
Lauderhill Fire Rescue said the two vehicles were driving recklessly and caused a chain reaction crash. Cameras clearly captured the moment the car plowed into two women standing on the sidewalk. One of the women would not survive the impact. The slain victim is identified as Helaine Elize of Lauderhill. The second woman is identified as Elsaine Tulisse.
Four people were taken to the hospital in critical condition while five others suffered minor injuries. State Road 7 was closed in both directions between Southwest 16th Street and Southwest 12th Street while police continued their investigation.
One witness said he was at a nearby gas station when he heard a loud boom.
"When I came I saw a lady, a body siting on the seat, she was pronounced dead on scene. And two other people were on the floor," said the witness, Anthony, who didn't give his last name. "It was just people everywhere, there was a lady on the floor over here, two people on the grass. It was just a wild scene."
All drivers remained on the scene except for the driver detectives suspect was involved in the initial reckless driving. Police are looking for a 2005 Red Dodge Neon with Florida tag HGK-S80.
