Father of 3 in Coma After Double Hit-and-Run in Plantation

Family members said Jose Cruz, of Sunrise, was left in critical condition at Broward General Hospital and was put into a medically-induced coma

A father of three was left in a coma after police say his car was rear-ended before he was struck by a car in an incident involving two hit-and-run drivers in Plantation.

Jose Cruz was stopped at a red light in his Honda Pilot on Sunrise Boulevard near the Florida's Turnpike around 6:20 a.m. Sunday when he was rear-ended by a red Dodge Caravan, Plantation Police officials said.

When Cruz stepped out of his vehicle, he was struck by a black Honda Accord that fled the scene, police said. Moments later, the driver of the Caravan got into his car and also fled the scene, police said.

Family members said Cruz, of Sunrise, was left in critical condition at Broward General Hospital and was put into a medically-induced coma with brain bleeding, broken ribs, a fractured leg and punctured lungs.

Cruz is married with three young daughters and could spend months in the coma, family members said. The family has set up a GoFundMe to pay for his medical expenses.
