A serial butt grabber has struck again at Florida International University. The FIU Police Department said Monday it is investigating a new report of a female student who had her buttock grabbed by a male riding a bicycle on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus.
It's an ongoing issue on the FIU campus and police say one man or several men could be behind it.
"You're at school and you think you're safe and you have to be worrying about people doing that kind of stuff to you," said student Natalie Varona.
Police said the latest incident happened in the area of the Green Library on Sunday, at approximately 9:30 p.m. And much like other reports, the man was riding a bike and grabbed a female student's butt.
Last year, FIU police said at least five of these incidents happened from June to September. An alert was sent out to the university community on Monday in reference to the most recent case.
"As a woman it's not fun that people are always trying to grope you and harass you," said Angela Torres, who said a few weeks ago she was the victim of a similar incident, but in her case the man was on rollerblades. "A guy went by and slapped me. And well I'm not about to have it, so I just threw my book bag at him."
Torres knows he didn't just bump into her by accident because she says the man slapped her so hard on her butt she got a bruise. "These guys come in with speed and they just wing at you."
Torres didn't report the incident because she describes the offender as a childish or silly teenager. She does, however, want to see an end to the butt-grabbing on campus and has a proposed solution.
"I notice that in other schools they have a call box, an emergency call box, and I think that would be a really good thing to put in FIU," she said.
FIU Police asks all members of the university community to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings. Anyone who sees anything or anyone suspicious, or has information about this incident, is asked to call the FIU Police immediately at: (305) 348-2626.
