Florida Agency Probes Woman's Collapse in Handcuffs at Hospital

Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration has started an investigation into a hospital after a woman collapsed there last week while being escorted in handcuffs from the facility.

Spokeswoman Mallory Deason said in a statement the agency will determine if any state or federal laws were violated after the Dec. 21 death of 57-year old Barbara Dawson. She collapsed at Calhoun-Liberty Hospital, where she had gone for breathing difficulties after an arrest for disorderly conduct and trespassing.

Blountstown Police Department chief Mark Mallory says doctors thought Dawson was stable and should be released.

Daryl Parks, the attorney representing the family, said Dawson, however, felt like she was still having breathing issues and wanted to stay.
