Florida City Police Officers Save Elderly Man Trapped in Sinking Mini Van

Two officers were able to get the elderly man out of the mini van as he was losing consciousness.

Two Florida City Police officers are being hailed as heroes after saving an elderly man who drove his car into a pond.

Police said 78-year-old Ernesto Sherwood accidentally drove his car into a pond at Southwest 9th Street and 8th Avenue after 8 p.m. on Thursday.

Officer Castilla, who was patrolling the Villages of Palm Bay Community, when he saw the Honda mini van submerged in the pond. He immediately called backup units on his radio.

He started to hear screams for help coming from the mini van, and saw that the window was begin to quickly fog up, so Officer Castilla went into the water to save Sherwood. Another officer, identified as Officer Rodriguez, arrived shortly after, and the two broke the car's window's to release Sherwood.

The officers dragged Sherwood, who was barely conscious, out of the water and released him to paramedics on scene for treatment.

Sherwood was reunited with his family that evening and his car was removed from the pond with the help of Miami-Dade Police.
