Florida Dad Fatally Shoots 2 Kids, Himself: Sheriff

Officials say a man shot his three children, killing two, and then turned the gun on himself after an argument with his wife at their central Florida home.

Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson says 52-year-old David Mohney; son 11-year-old David Mohney; and daughter 14-year-old Savanna died in the shooting, early Friday in a neighborhood south of Daytona Beach. Johnson says 9-year-old daughter Lauren was taken to an Orlando hospital with critical injuries.

After the fight broke out Friday, Cynthia Mohney fled to a neighbor's house to get help, and she told deputies that her husband had threatened her with a gun, officials said. They said she wasn't injured, and investigators were questioning her Friday morning.

Deputies received a call about the incident at 5:11 a.m. A short time later, the sound of gunfire was heard inside the Port Orange home. Arriving deputies found the man and children inside. The two girls were in an upstairs bedroom together, the boy was in a bedroom on the ground floor, Their father was found on the kitchen floor with a handgun next to him.

The son was pronounced dead at the scene. The father and 14-year-old daughter were taken a Daytona Beach hospital, where they were both pronounced dead.

The couple had filed for divorce and had at least one previous issue with domestic violence, according to court records.

"It's basically a cowardly event. If you want to commit suicide, then commit suicide. But to shoot children, that's cowardly," Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson said, according to WESH.

The shooting occurred in a home in the Spruce Creek Farms subdivision of Port Orange, about five miles south of Daytona Beach.
