Florida Gulf Coast University Student Dies in Dorm

A freshman at Florida Gulf Coast University has died after being found in apparent "distress" at a dorm.

University Vice President Susan Evans told the News-Press of Fort Myers that rescue crews were called to the Biscayne Village dorm around 4 a.m. Sunday. A university police report lists 19-year-old Austin Lee Vonckx of Pasco County as having trouble breathing and "possibly intoxicated."

Evans says Vonckx was unresponsive when rescue crews arrived. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Gulf Coast Hospital Medical Center. She says no cause of death has been determined and that university police would conduct an investigation.

According to the university, 406 first-year students live in the dorm.

Evans says the university has expressed condolences to his family and counselors are available for students.
