A Florida International University nursing student was found dead over the weekend while attending an off-campus party, police said.
Kellie Fullilove was found dead Sunday in a room at Fort Lauderdale's Bahia Mar Resort.
"We are saddened by the death of a student this past weekend. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends," the university said in a statement. "The student had attended an off campus social event organized by Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity right before she passed away."
According to Fort Lauderdale Police, Fullilove, along with several others, attended an after party at Bahia Mar. Sunday morning Fullilove's friends awoke to find her unresponsive. EMS was called and couldn't revive her.
NBC 6 tried to talk the Phi Gamma Delta, also known as FIJI, for explanation Wednesday, but were told to leave.
Her family issued a statement through their attorney late Wednesday.
"Kellie's family is simply asking for all involved to respect their privacy as they mourn the loss of their loved one," attorney Michael Grieco said. "We are allowing the Broward detectives to do their job and expect no further speculation or comment until they have completed their investigation."
"This is something serious and FIJI, this specific fraternity, has come under fire this past few years," civil engineering student Gabriel Echavarria said.
Echavarria said people were talking about the death on Yeti, FIU's social media site similar to Snapchat.
"On things like Yeti, they always get, they're always under fire because of the reputation," he said.
In 2008, the fraternity was investigated for an amateur porn being shot in the frat house. Echavarria said they're known for loud, wild parties.
"Well I've experienced those parties and I've learned from my mistakes, FIU junior Tiffany Oliver said. "For those who are coming to universities from high school I say just pick the right people to be around."
Police have yet to release their report on the incident, so it's not clear what happened before Fullilove's body was discovered.
