Florida Keys Authorities Investigate Drowning Death of Child Found in Canal

6-year-old found in canal in Sugarloaf Key dies: Authorities

Authorities are investigating the death of a 6-year-old Florida Keys boy who was pulled from a canal Monday and couldn't be resuscitated.

Jaydean Butler had been last seen sitting on a porch eating pistachios at his family's home on Sugarloaf Key, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said.

The boy's mother, 29-year-old Carletta Butler, was inside feeding her second child, a newborn baby, authorities said.

When she and another adult went looking for the boy, they found him in the canal unresponsive and began performing cardio pulmonary resuscitation.

Deputies arrived and found the boy wasn't breathing and they took over the CPR. Paramedics also responded and tried to resuscitate the boy with no luck.

Detectives from the Sheriff's Major Crimes Unit are now investigating the death.
