Florida Man Gets Death Penalty for Killing Fellow Inmate

Elijah Brookins sentenced to death in 2011 murder

A Florida man already serving a life sentence for a fatal robbery has been sentenced to death for killing a fellow inmate.

A Gadsden County judge followed a jury's 10-2 recommendation in the Thursday sentencing of 34-year-old Elijah Brookins. He was convicted last month of first-degree murder.

Authorities say Brookins stabbed 34-year-old Eric Sexton in 2011 while traveling on a Department of Corrections bus from the Jefferson Correctional Institute to the Northwest Florida Reception Center. Brookins tossed the shank out the window, but it was later found.

Authorities say the motive for the stabbing was robbery. Brookins reportedly went through Sexton's belongings, ate his lunch and urinated on the dead body.

The Tallahassee Democrat reports that Brookins was already serving a life sentence for a 1995 first-degree murder and robbery.
