The Florida Panthers started the celebration of a quarter century in South Florida with the unveiling of a new logo they will use this season to honor 25 years on the ice.

Officials from the team showed off the design at an event in Fort Lauderdale on Friday with fans and other members of the organization. The logo incorporated the flag of the state of Florida along with the palm tree and hockey stick that has been on their uniforms for years and other items from previous logos throughout their history.

The expansion franchise was awarded to South Florida in December 1992 and began play the following October after a bid by Wayne Huizenga, who passed away in March.

The team played for five seasons, including a run to the Stanley Cup Final in the 1995-96 season, in the former Miami Arena before moving to their current home in Sunrise.

Since that memorable run for a championship, the team has made the playoffs just four times in the last 21 seasons and just twice since the 1999-2000 year.

Florida will begin their preseason schedule with two games on September 17th against the Nashville Predators inside the BB&T Center and finish against their in-state rivals, the Tampa Bay Lightning, on September 29th.
