“Tonight, some Senate Democrats decided to shut down the government over DACA. While I support addressing DACA in conjunction with increased border security, shutting down the government over this issue will prove impossible to justify.”

“The Trump Shutdown is a reckless refusal to responsibly govern by a Republican party that controls both Houses of Congress and the White House, and fittingly arrives on the one year anniversary of Trump’s inauguration, putting his destructive and chaotic lack of leadership in sharp focus. This total budget failure threatens public health, stymies our economy, wastes military resources and blocks basic investments in research and services in our communities. It’s no surprise that a party focused on tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy produces an irresponsible month-to-month budget that neglects broad Americans priorities, such as children’s health care, pension protection and defending DREAMers. Governing by dividing doesn’t work. Let’s end this Trump Shutdown, work together and focus on bipartisan progress. Americans deserve much better than this.”

“Thursday, the House passed an agreement to fund the government and extend the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for 6 years, but sadly tonight, the Senate decided to put partisanship before the people they represent. The talking heads on tv are already debating who loses more from this shut down: Democrats or Republicans. But with both sides pointing fingers at each other, the real losers are the American people and the millions of children that rely on CHIP for their healthcare. “It's clear that Washington is fundamentally broken, and it won't be fixed until our "leaders" start actually leading instead of trying to one up each other and get a sound bite to put in their next TV ad. Everybody supports extending CHIP and everybody supports keeping the government open, so let's get this job done.”

“These short-term funding bills are hurting our national security and, at some point, we have a responsibility to say enough is enough. Now efforts have intensified at a bipartisan solution. I am hopeful that an agreement may be reached in the next couple of days.”

“Republican lawmakers’ attempt to place the blame for the government shutting down is laughable because this is clearly a Trump Shutdown. The president would not accept any of the proposals he was offered, no matter what they entailed, because he does not know what he is doing. Republican leadership also failed the nation by even giving President Trump a choice. “The GOP controls the House, the Senate, and the White House, but they couldn’t get it together to do something as fundamental as keeping government open. Their incompetence has endangered our economy, hurt our communities, and dangerously deprived the military of the certainty our soldiers need to keep our nation safe. “This shutdown did not have to happen. We need Republicans to show some leadership and work to find common ground to meet the needs of the American people. Democrats will continue to do our jobs and push for real action for veterans, children, Dreamers, workers, seniors, communities ravaged by opioids, and families worried about how this government closure will impact them.” “My office will continue to do whatever we can to help local families and businesses navigate the Trump Shutdown.”
