Florida Republicans have selected a 53-year-old egg farmer to be next in line to lead them in the state Senate.

Sen. Wilton Simpson will assume leadership of the legislative body after its current president, Sen. Bill Galvano, steps down next year. Simpson was officially designated after the Senate's Republican Caucus chose him Tuesday by unanimous vote.

Of course, that depends on whether Republicans retain control of the state Senate following the November elections in 2020. Republicans currently have a six-seat advantage over Democrats in the 40-member body.

In his remarks, Simpson referred to his entry into elected office without any prior political experience, calling himself a farmer and entrepreneur.

He says his legislative priorities include education, water management and making it easier for children to be adopted.
